Stranger Things Have Happened, but a Carnivore's Craving for Flesh Fading?

A Gift of Fresh Prey Goes Untouched—Disappears Before Dawn

Mother tossed him the Weasel, still warm from the hunt, and Sayah accepted it with gratitude.

Then he leaned over the long, furry carcass—and swooned.

The sight of blood beading in small droplets on the fur. The faint, metallic scent. His gorge rose before he could stop it.

He didn't vomit. He only almost did.

"I'm not hungry right now," he told Mother. "Would it be all right if I ate later?"

But he didn't eat later. Before dawn, while the nest lay quiet, he gripped the Weasel's tail in his beak and crept out onto the branches of the Tree.

He couldn't pitch the body from the nest — dead Weasels raining down on Sanctuary would displease Miyam. So he inched to the far end of a branch, passed the stiffening carcass from beak to talon, and hurled it as hard as he could.

The limp form flew well past the hedge below. He was surprised at his own strength.

Standing on the swaying branch in the pre-dawn dark, Sayah began to understand.

The strange wafer hadn't just satisfied his appetite. It had replaced the lust for blood that once ran in his veins.

"But if I can't eat the meat Mother brings me — what can I eat?"
