Hidden Predator Trembles Before Kindly Youth
Nat's Gentle Welcome Coaxes Frightened Predator from Hiding
From the grass, a sullen voice drawled, "I'm nothing special to look at."
Nat suppressed a laugh. "Are we going to talk through the grass all day? Maybe we could move over to the berry patch so at least I can have a snack while you protect your modesty, eh?"
"Was that supposed to be funny?" the stranger crowed.
Nat grinned. "Could we start with names? My name is Nat. Now how about yours?"
"Uh, well, ummm—"
"Uh-well-um, huh?" Nat countered. "Sounds like a Newt's name. Are you a Newt?"
Goaded, the stranger burst into view—an æglet, blanketed in dark fluff, lanky wings sagging, distended belly flopping as he approached with angry strides.
Nat stood his ground. "There you are! Good to meet you! My name is Nat!"
Shocked at Nat's abrupt, amiable change, the æglet blinked and recoiled. He'd never seen such cheerful kindness.
Against the barren, obsidian sky of Sayah's confidence arose a glimmer, evidence of a newborn star as Sayah extended a timid trust.
"My name is... my name is Sayah."
Nat beamed. "I like it!"
Unaccustomed to kindness, Sayah tucked his bashful head. "Thank you."
